DIY Behavior Reward Charts that Works | Positive Parenting Solutions!

‘Positive Parenting Solutions’ – is something that I have been hearing more frequently in recent times. Whether I go to a birthday party, a potluck, or meet some friends at a mall for some fun alone time, at least one parent will grumble about his/her kid’s behavioral problems. Viola, the whole fun conversation then shifts from movies and politics to the most dreaded parenting stuff. And there will be one ‘know-it-all’ parent, who pours tricks and tips on expert parenting while his/her own kid misbehaves and needs the utmost help. To avoid all such drama, I am going to teach you how to make a Behavior Reward Chart that actually works! Tried and tested by me on my 6-yr old daughter!

To bring order to their homes, many parents started using Behavior Reward and Consequences Charts. However, how many of them are effective is a question that we don’t have an answer to. Well! I didn’t get a definitive answer when I did all the groundwork. Google and Pinterest offered numerous ideas. I was overwhelmed and couldn’t choose one. Then, I randomly tried a few which were epic failures. Totally fed up, I created one myself and tested it. To my surprise, the gig worked!

DIY Behavior Chart for Kids:

Trust me guys! This technique is going to be one of the best positive parenting solutions ever. I would like to call this chart ‘Ten Steps to Treat’! It is like the kids must work their way through ten steps to earn a treat. The children will get what I would call a ‘Sprinkle’ every time they showcase good behavior, help a family member, clean up toys, watch less TV/tablet/phone, and do much more. You can tell them beforehand what the reward will be which will pique their interest and encourage them to do more & behave properly.

Supplies Needed:

Magnetic whiteboard

Dry/erase marker

Magnets

Star/reward stickers

Steps to Make Kids Behavior Reward Charts:

  • First, stick motivating reward stickers onto the magnets as shown in the image
  • Then using a dry/erase marker draw ten circles following in an orderly manner reaching the final reward point. Refer to the image attached
  • All you have to do is, stick the reward magnet onto the circle every time your child earns a sprinkle. When they get 10 sprinkles, they earn a treat/reward
  • I didn’t create a separate consequences chart as implementing too many systems can be confusing to the child. Instead, I created ‘Wrinkles’. It means children will lose a sprinkle and be one step behind if they pose any misconduct
  • Leave the decision to them – Sprinkle or Wrinkle? Trust me! They will definitely work hard to get the next sprinkle

In case, you need a simple system instead of the whiteboard, magnets, and stickers, I have a simple solution for you. When this diy behavior reward chart is done, you can print another one and hang it. As simple as that! Hope this system helps parents out there!!!

What if it does not work?

It is always easier than done right? Yes! Not all kids are the same! What worked for me and many other moms may not work for you and that is the bitter truth. Do not give up on the very first try. Try at least two to three times. If such behavior reward charts don’t work for you, then you need to experiment with what works best for your child. I came up with this method when none of the Pinterest or Google ideas worked for me. So, you will also come up with one such idea soon. Just, do not lose hope yet! All the best to you!!

Conclusion:

Do not think that this technique is some kind of bribe for children to do something. No! It is definitely that! Perceive it this way – You work extra hard at your workplace to earn that promotion you have always yearned for or work overtime to get that extra incentive to plan for a dream vacation! This is something like that. Kids need encouragement every now and then just like adults do. Let’s do it in a good way through positive parenting solutions!
