Do you know that the little lifestyle changes that we make today can have a huge impact on the environment tomorrow? Yes! That’s why I started to make the switch to eco-friendly products that go easy on the environment. Have you? I know it is not going to be an easy task. At the start, I was too ambitious. So, I went on a full-blown expedition to change everything green in my house and reduce the carbon footprint. It was an epic failure! Taking a huge leap is going to be overwhelming, so take baby steps. Let me share some sustainable products examples and a few tips on how I made a switch to them.
Clean with Eco-friendly Products:
The first area I decided to make the switch to eco-friendly products is the kitchen. It is easier this way! Because if you start with personal hygiene, then you will drop the whole idea of going green.
- Firstly, I replaced the conventional dishwashing liquid with a natural, plant-based product – the Mrs. Meyer’s dish soap
- Then, I replaced the all-purpose cleaners, kitchen hand soaps, trash bags, and more with sustainable options
- I couldn’t completely abandon the kitchen paper towels, to be honest. Instead, I have reduced their use and chosen to clean all surfaces with machine-washable, eco-friendly microfiber cloths that are super absorbent
- Using biodegradable scrubbers, disinfectant wipes can make a huge difference to the planet
- Once you are done with the kitchen, apply the concept of sustainability to bathrooms. Choose eco-friendly products when choosing toilet bowl cleaners, brushes, and more!
- Moving to laundry! Some sustainable products examples I use include the ECOS laundry detergent, Seventh Generation fabric softener, and sheets.

Cook & Store with Conscience:
- Although it is super comfy to cook in non-stick cookware items, I parted ways with them 3 years back. Currently, I am using earthenware, stainless steel and cast iron cookware, which are healthy and sustainable choices
- Straws are a staple in every household that has kids. Get rid of those plastic straws and make use of reusable stainless-steel straws, available at Amazon.com
- The same idea is not applicable when it comes to getting rid of disposable cups and plates. Yes! I agree they come in handy while hosting frequent get-togethers and parties. Remember, baby steps! Try to reduce the usage even though it might be super tempting
- Replacing plastic with glass reusable food storage containers can be the best thing you can do to this environment
- Use biodegradable or compostable Ziplock bags to store leftover food, freeze meat or to pack a snack
- Use compost bins to reduce food waste at home and make organic fertilizer for your garden

Save Trees:
- I know most of us are trying to avoid plastic items, which is good! Same way, if we start to restrict the use of paper, cardboard, and wood, the trees would be super happy
- Choose e-books over paper books, use recycled paper, print less, and recycle magazines, cardboard boxes & more to reduce your carbon footprint
- Inculcate the seriousness of global warming and going green in kids at an early stage. Get them to use recycled paper and pencils. Make it a habit to trash food waste and recycle items separately. Your kids will follow in your footsteps
- Finally plant more trees and spread the word

Personal Hygiene:
Once you have successfully implemented the aforementioned things, you can move to go green on your personal hygiene. Making the shift is tough in this area, that’s why I saved it for the last.
- Right from bodywash, shampoo, and moisturizing creams to toothpaste, dental floss, and cotton swabs, there are a lot of personal care products. For starters, pick a few items from this list and choose eco-friendly options. Then, you can go green on other items. You will not feel overwhelmed this way!
- Replace sanitary napkins with menstrual cups
- Replace cotton balls and makeup remover pads with reusable cloth pads
- Make use of cloth diapers instead of the regular ones

Conclusion:
If you have done even a fraction of these things, then you are contributing a great deal of good to the environment. Practice more and you will completely go green one day! I hope these tips would help you make that switch a little bit easier. I will share some more tips on how to make your own eco-friendly cleaners at home in another blog!
